St. Avold - Molsheim

 Thursday 24 July

Today we travelled from Montmedy to St. Avold, a town east of Metz.  We came to a small Camping-Car Park on the outskirts of the town.  Our afternoon walk was into the town (about half an hour) to try and find a multi-geocache which comprised of finding 4 different fountains.  We worked out a route to each of them, stopping off by one of them to have an ice cream.

This was another, and the last one, so we stopped here to work out the final co-ordinates from the numbers we'd found at each location.  Oh dear, it was quite a way in the opposite direction to our route 'home'.  So we thought we'd go that way in the van when we leave in the morning.
We set off back to the site, wondering if that black cloud we'd noticed was going to settle over us.  We hadn't gone very far, of course, before it started to rain some big spots.  So out came our cagouls and the 1 brolly we'd carried.  After a few minutes it had turned quite heavy, so we decided to take cover for a while under an overhanging building.  Hmm ... it didn't seem like a passing shower!  It came down in sheets and showed no sign of stopping, so off we set again.  Really glad we did as that was just the start of it!!  We were pretty well soaked by the time we got back to the van but as we stripped off and put dry clothes on, the real storm raged over us - almighty crashes of thunder and more rain than we've seen in weeks!  No more photos taken, but we did finish our first jigsaw .... reminded us of the square in front of our honeymoon hotel in Helmsley, Yorkshire.

 Friday 25 July

When we set off this morning, we drove into St. Avold with the aim of finding yesterday's geo, but the one-way systems and the lively market threw us off the scent and decided to give that one a miss.  All yesterday's wet clothes were heaped in the shower awaiting a washing machine, but our trainers were still soaking this morning - we hoped it was going to be a sandals all day job today.  Fortunately, it has been, especially since we arrived at our next stop - Camping Municipal, Molsheim in Northern Alsace.

It's quite a busy, but small, campsite that we are staying at till Tuesday.  Tomorrow, Peter and Hannah arrive to stay in one of the 5 'mobilhomes'.  At reception, I bought a jeton for the washing machine, and soon all our wet stuff plus other stuff was washed, hung out and dried in no time.  Shoes in the sunshine have nearly dried too.

The lovely sunshine meant that we decided to leave exploring till tomorrow and had a very relaxing afternoon, then evening starting another puzzle.  We really do know how to live it up, don't we!

  1. I’m pleased that you have dried out! I remember getting soaked to the skin in France. We ended up i. a cave where we found several other ‘refugees’. Happy days🤗

  2. Since then I have discovered Seasalt rainwear - tested on the Cornish coasts. They certainly work and have had plenty of tests! xx

  3. Think I fared better with the weather on the Guide 2 night stay at Blackland Farm activity centre, just s few light spots over the three days. We were in some indoor accommodation. The girls enjoyed all the activities and our self catering went well until the sausages being cooked for tea set of the fire alarm! All credit to the centre staff who arrived at the door very promptly to sort us out! Came yesterday very tired but feeling better after lots of sleep xx
